

SHOJI WITH CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

I PREFER TO USE WESTERN RED CEDAR
TO MAKE SHOJI, ALTHOUGH I HAVE USED
ASH, BASSWOOD, CYPRUS, CHERRY, MAPLE,
MAHOGANY, OAK, POPLAR, WHITE PINE,
AND WALNUT. IF I LIVED ON THE WEST COAST I WOULD USE PORT ORFORD CEDAR, BUT ON
THE EAST COAST IT IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND OR AFFORD.
I ALSO LIKE TO SPRAY MY SHOJI WITH
CLEAR LACQUER, BUT I HAVE SPRAYED
THE SHOJI WITH BLACK, WHITE, RED, AND
EVEN PINK LACQUER AS WELL AS MANY
DIFFERENT STAINS.
I USE LAMINATED RICE PAPER, THAT I IMPORT
FROM JAPAN, FOR THE INSERT. I HAVE ALSO
USED FIBERGLASS PAPER, RAW SILK, FABRIC,
AND REGULAR RICE PAPER WHEN REQUESTED.
